Overview


Performs advanced patient care procedures (such as, initiation of intravenous therapy, splinting / casting, suturing, and simple patient teaching) under the direction of a licensed Nurse or Physician and / or performs advanced support-procedures for the operation of a Nursing or Clinical unit. Coordinates equipment and / or supply systems. Performs sterile processing procedures

Qualifications

High school or equivalent plus trade or vocational school in medical / surgical patient care. One to three years experience preferred. Receives on-the-job training and competency verification to perform primary functions. Licensed by the State of NM or National Registry as an EMT Intermediate.

Responsibilities


*Monitors patients and collects information for documentation in the patient record. Stamps and assembles patient charts. Posts laboratory and other tests results. Transports patients and documents action on patient record. Monitors patients and collects information for documentation in patient record. Collects and records vital signs in patient record. Provides simple patient teaching and discharge instructions

*Inserts and removes non-medicated, peripheral intravenous therapy lines under the direction of a physician. Performs phlebotomy. Collects samples from central line catheters. Performs arterial puncture and blood collection

*Performs wound care and dressing changes. Prepares patients for surgery. Inserts and removes gastric and urethral tubes. Performs enemas and disimpactions. Applies plaster and fiberglass splints, casts and traction devices. Performs bedside testing such as oximetry, ECG, Glucometery, urinalysis and other tests. Anesthetizes, scrubs and sutures wounds under the direction of a physician

*Coordinates and maintains specific equipment and / or supply systems. Coordinates and maintains specific sterile processing systems

*Operates patient monitoring systems specific to unit needs ( such as, cardiac and fetal heart monitoring).

*Uses the computerized Patient Care Information System (PACIS) at the skill level commensurate with the responsibilities included in this description, as well as that of a Unit Secretary (544), if required

*Insures cleanliness of nutrition areas and general unit. Cleans and stores equipment. Empties trash, linen bags and sharps containers

*Stocks medical supplies, linens and paper goods. Inventories equipment as required. Processes broken equipment as directed. Maintains equipment logs as required

*Delivers specimens to Laboratory, Microbiology and Pathology. Transports x-rays, blood and equipment. Performs basic clerical duties such as answering phones, taking messages, filing and copying

*Participates in the nutritional well being of the patient through tray delivery, assistance with patient set-up, assists those patients that are dependent for their intake needs, and accurately records consumption

*Administers oxygen under the direction of a licensed Nurse. Assists nurses and physicians with sterile procedures. Assists with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing and walking patients

*Assists or provides patient hygiene to include, shaving, mough care, foot care, pericare, and bathing

*Assists patients with portable or wall oxygen and assures proper storage of E cylinders

*Organizes care in a manner that contributes to the overall quality of the team

*Communicates information pertinent to the end of shift summation before leaving the unit

Performs other functions as required/requested.
