Summary:
Provides assistance and support to the surgical team by evaluating and coordinating activities during surgical procedures. ST / FA perform pre- and post-operative activities to facilitate optimal patient care. ST / FA will anticipate the needs of the surgeons and provide necessary supplies and support for procedures.

Responsibilities:
Prepare and provide instruments and equipment during surgical procedures in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse and / or surgeon
Prepare and position the patient for surgery, prepare the skin for surgical incision
Assist in visualization of the operating field by providing visibility with the help of retractors, sponges, suctioning or manipulating sutures. Will make sure that they are in position that does not obstruct the surgeon�s line of vision
Provide (as needed) assistance in controlling blood flow (through hemostasis, cauterization, clamps, tourniquets or pressure)
Secures drainage systems to prevent the accumulation of fluid in the body post operatively
Ensure the patient has adequate volume of bodily fluids during the surgery. Administer blood transfusions, IV or injections to prevent the deteriorating function of tissues and organs
Harvest surgical grafts
Perform closure of incisions (with sutures or staples)
Apply wound dressings
Follow facility protocol and policy as well as other state and federal laws and regulations
