Summary:
Performs cardiac ultrasound (echocardiograms); Produces images of the heart to show hemodynamics and function via cardiac ultrasound. Cardiac images are digitally acquired, and measurements obtained. Ensures patient safety through use of procedure protocols and policies. Continues to learn and hone their skills and techniques as a beginner sonographer. Further developing their technical skills and learning the different procedures prior to being registered.

*High school diploma or GED is required
*Graduate of an accredited school of Ultrasound Technology preferred
*A single two-year allied health education program that is patient care related.
Allied health occupations included, but not limited to, diagnostic medical sonography, radiologic technologists, respiratory therapist, occupational therapists, physical therapists and registered nurse.
*1 year experience inpatient/outpatient cardiac ultrasound preferred.
*New Mexico State Licensure under the New Mexico Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program (NMRTT)
*Current BLS required.
*Must pass registry exam for ARDMS or CCI within two years of start date as a condition of continued employment by meeting the required performed studies.
*Demonstrates knowledge and understanding and cardiac anatomy and the practice of echocardiography.

Responsibilities:
* Performs all routine echocardiograms for evaluation of possible abnormal heart defects or disease (inpatient or outpatient).
*Perform studies starting out with some assistance and start to advance with little to no supervision.
* Requires basic knowledge of cardiac anatomy, pathophysiology and principles of ultrasound.
* Start to learn independent judgement for additional imaging agents. Work with a mentor and learn the reasons for determining the need to for any additional imaging
enhancement or bubble study.
* Demonstrates basic clinical knowledge and start to develop critical thinking skills to be able to recognize, analyze and resolve problems to ensure completion of performed
exam.
* Accurately completes charges for all exams performed in the EHR system as well as initiate and assign the preliminary report in PACS.
* Keeps current with developments in the field prior to passing board, this will include participation in seminars, workshops and study groups.
* Available for call on a monthly rotational basis, once cleared to be independent.
* Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infections disease, and patient safety protocols, policies, and
procedures.
* Maintains and documents communications with physician and nursing units regarding test results.
* Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient�s ability to understand.
* Function as a team member to organize and prioritize responsibilities to complete daily work requirements.
* Consults with and keep lead techs informed of activities, needs and problems in assigned areas.
* Maintain requirements for hospital/departmental and specialty area(s) competencies.
* Participates in and endorses the established PHS Policies and Procedures and guest relations programs.
* Learn Joint Commission regulations pertaining to the lab.
* Performs other duties and functions as required.
